Wood Floor Filling in London
Natural wooden floors are lovely. The variety of grains and patterns in real wood floorboards create a beautiful, natural effect in your home or office space. This is something that is simply not available with mass-produced floors. However, gaps often appear between the floorboards. We all know that London weather is notoriously temperamental. Changes in temperature, along with modern heating and house movements, cause floorboards to retract and expand due to the water molecules inside them. This creates natural shrinkage, leaving gaps between each board. The gaps collect dust and hair, making cleaning more difficult, as well causing drafts and creaking. At its worst, this process of shrinking and expanding can cause the wood to warp and the floor to buckle.
There is a solution: floor filling. Traditionally, a floor restoration expert made a filler from the clean dust of the wood floor mixed with a resin. They would achieve the perfect consistency and mass fill the floor, sealing gaps and reducing drafts. While this is still an option for many floors (and you can talk to one of our specialists about this), Quicksand offers an easier and faster option that achieves professional, natural wood floors without the annoying gaps.
Specialist Wood Floor Filling
‘Sliver’ is a filler we use to close the gaps. This filler prevents dust build-up and allowing you to achieve a professional-looking floor with minimal fuss. It is a filler that does not shrink over time, as many do, nor fall between the floorboard gaps and become loose. Neither does it change colour and reduce the quality of your floor’s finish.
Professionals make sliver from strips or wedges of reclaimed floorboard. This helps it blend into the natural look of your floor. Quicksand’s unique take on this technique uses a wedge of reclaimed, high-quality pine. This fills floorboard gaps, prevents dust build up and, importantly, can handle applications of varnish in the same way that your ordinary wooden floor can. This allows us to apply a water-borne sealer finish, which keeps floors their natural colour without fading, or even another form of oil or wax. It also provides a solution to applying floorboards to areas with a pipe beneath, in which nails cannot be used.
